On-line learning portal launched for general and flag officers

An innovative and interactive learning portal for general officers and flag officers (GOFO) was launched in December 2016.

The GOFO Portal houses three separate but integrated components of the Officer Professional Development Period (DP) 5, with links to Common Professional Military Education, Continuing Professional Development, and Executive Education (still under development). In-class and online courses, seminars, workshops, experiential learning and fellowship opportunities, broadcast media, and short articles are all featured on the portal.

“This professional development portal is intended as a digital space for them [GOFOs] to engage in a variety of formal and informal learning activities and events,” said Colonel Bruce Ewing, Director of Professional Development at Military Personnel Generation (MILPERSGEN) Headquarters in Kingston.

A goal of many professions is to foster and sustain a culture of continuous learning, providing opportunities for members to exchange ideas and experiences, and the CAF is no exception.

“The GOFO Portal distributes relevant materials and content necessary for fulfilling GOFO functional responsibilities and the exchange of ideas on topical issues,” said project lead Dr. David Emelifeonwu, Senior Staff Officer, Educational Engagements. “In return, it offers an opportunity for senior leaders to recommend and share their own content.”

The portal contains many different assets that are readily accessible to its users via the Defence Learning Network (DLN 2.0).

“These include CDS-recommended articles and featured links that address topical issues of interest to the Profession of Arms and to our whole-of-government partners,” said Brigadier-General Steven Whelan, Commander MILPERSGEN.
