Radar disposal project clears way for next generation systems
By Sergeant Marc Ouellette
The removal of the last radar associated with the legacy Terminal Radar and Control System marked the end of an era in support to Canadian Armed Forces air operations.
The radar was removed on November 30 at 3e Escadre Bagotville, Que. The radars have been a cornerstone of air traffic control at wings across the country since 1982, including 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alta., 8 Wing and Aerospace and Telecommunications Engineering Support Squadron Trenton, Ont., 14 Wing Greenwood, N.S., and 19 Wing Comox, B.C.
As part of the radar replacement project, next generation radars are currently being delivered and installed in order to continue essential air traffic management services across Canada.
The disposal initiative was a two-year effort culminating with 3e Escadre Bagotville as the last site of the storied radars.
