For the first time ever, the 2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (2 CRPG) will be represented at the traditional International Four Days Marches in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in July.
A team of 11 (seven Rangers and four ordinary military members from 2 CRPG) will begin the walk on July 17 alongside 45 000 other people, including approximately 5000 military members, and walk 30 to 50 kilometres per day. The idea to take part in the event came from Sergeant Alain Garnier, who ended up becoming the team leader.
“I’ve been wanting to take part in this event for two years. This year, I decided to get the ball rolling and to put together a team to represent our service,” said Sgt Garnier.
The International Four Days Marches Nijmegen is a civilian-military activity that is often referred to as the world’s largest walking event. Its purpose is to commemorate the 7600 soldiers and air personnel who died in the fighting to liberate the Netherlands in 1944 and 1945.
Obviously, this kind of trek demands proper training. “We have a pre-established program that was provided to us by the event’s organizers. However, we worked with Personnel Support Programs’ Fitness Team so they could suggest individual training for us,” explained Sgt Garnier.
As the team’s 11 marchers are scattered across Quebec, individual training is a must. However, team members did get together early this spring to do a 20-km march as a group.
The team’s captain is looking forward to this adventure with his 10 partners. “I know we’ll be ready for this experience to go well,” said Sgt Garnier.
